Spigen Urban Fit Review - Best MacBook Pro Case?

Spigen Urban Fit Case on MacBook Pro

Most MacBook Pro cases are made of plastic, and while they get the job done, I don’t particularly like how they feel in hand. That’s why, when I came across the Spigen Urban Fit case for the MacBook Pro, I had to try it. I purchased this case with my own money and have used it for over a month. In this review, I will cover its benefits and drawbacks so that you can make an informed purchase decision.

Unboxing and first impressions

The Spigen Urban Fit case for MacBook Pro comes in a standard cardboard box. I have the 14-inch MacBook Pro case here, but the case is also available for 16-inch MacBook Pro and 13-inch and 15-inch MacBook Air.

The unboxing experience is nothing extraordinary. The case is housed in a cheap plastic and protected by some foam. The inside of the case is plastic and has a diamond pattern. The outer layer has a premium fabric that feels good to the touch and looks even better. It’s certainly better than the plastic cases I have used in the past.

Putting the case on the MacBook Pro is easy. You line the case properly and push it until the small tabs attach with a snap. Once those tabs are in place, the case is not going anywhere. Now that we have attached the case, let’s take a moment to appreciate how good it looks.

Apart from a simple Spigen logo, there's nothing marring the beauty of this case. I love minimalist cases, and this one fits the bill.

1-month later review

I have had this case on my 14-inch MacBook Pro for the past month and noticed its quirks. My first worry when buying this case was that it would pick up dirt and grime easier than the plastic cases, but that has not been the case.

Even after a month of use, the case looks good, and I don’t notice any dirt spots or discoloration. Granted, I am careful with my MacBook Pro and haven’t dropped anything that will leave a permanent mark, but it feels good to know that, with regular use, the case will not deteriorate.

My second concern was about cooling. Thankfully, I didn’t notice any extra heat build-up or performance throttling. It has precision-cut vents for air intake and exhaust and doesn’t interfere much with heat dissipation. That said, plastic and fiber will never be as good as radiating heat as your MacBook’s aluminum body.

The case has generous cut-outs for ports, and I never faced issues connecting my Mac accessories. Another win for this case is its rubber feet. They provide ample friction, and I never had to worry about my MacBook Pro slipping on a table.

While the case is quite slim, it weighs 300 grams or 10.6 ounces, and I noticed the extra heft when I first applied the case to my MacBook Pro. But after a month of use, I have become used to it, and it doesn’t bother me much. If that’s too heavy, there are some slim plastic cases. But they also weigh around 250 grams or 8.8 ounces, which won't be such a game changer.

My main concern with the weight was the top cover putting extra pressure on the hinge. Thankfully, the top panel of the case is quite slim. I can prop up the display at any angle, and it doesn't automatically change due to the extra weight.

Talking about the extra pressure on the hinge, many users give that as a reason not to use any case with your MacBook Pro. While the concern is valid, I don’t think Apple would have sold MacBook cases on their website if they believed it would harm their product. As long as you are staying away from cases that are way too bulky, there’s no issue here.

Let’s finish our review with one drawback of the case I have noticed. When I push on the two snap connectors in the palm area of the laptop, it doesn’t take much pressure to push them down. But, since the side ones are firmly attached, the case never came out on its own. It’s more of an annoyance than a real issue.

Once I found this issue, I searched the interweb to see whether other users were facing the same problem, but I didn’t find many examples. It might just be that my unit was faulty, and since it was not a big concern, I didn’t get it replaced.

Overall, I am happy with the case and can recommend it to anyone looking for a good MacBook Pro case. The case is available for all MacBook Pro and Air models, and you can find the product links in the video description.
