3 Ways to Use ChatGPT with Apple Intelligence
Apple Intelligence is not so intelligent. To overcome its shortcomings, Apple has integrated ChatGPT with Apple Intelligence. The best part is that you don’t need to create a ChatGPT account to use it, which is good for your privacy. Here are three exciting ways you can use ChatGPT with Apple Intelligence.
Set up ChatGPT
Before we begin, let’s first set up ChatGPT to use with our iPhone.
1. To enable ChatGPT on your iPhone, launch the Settings app and open Apple Intelligence & Siri settings.
2. Under the Extensions menu, you should see ChatGPT as an option. Tap to open it.
3. Now tap the Set Up.. button next to the Use ChatGPT option.
4. You will see a few splash screens detailing the features and privacy. Tap Next and then Enable ChatGPT to proceed.
If you have a ChatGPT account, you can use the Sign In button to log into it. I won't do that, as I don’t use a premium account with ChatGPT.
When you use ChatGPT with Siri, it prompts you each time before sending your request to ChatGPT. If you don’t want that to happen, turn off the toggle next to Confirm ChatGPT Requests. I keep it on because I want to know when my requests are sent to ChatGPT.
Now that we have set ChatGPT with Apple Intelligence, let’s see how to access it.
Use ChatGPT with Siri
The fastest way to access ChatGPT with Apple Intelligence is via Siri. Apple has integrated ChatGPT with Siri, allowing you to get answers to more complex questions. When you ask Siri a question, it first uses Apple Intelligence to give you an answer.
However, if a question is complex enough, Siri will send the question to ChatGPT for an answer. It’s a hit or miss, as you never know which questions Siri will ask to send to ChatGPT.
There’s a workaround to resolve this issue. If you want your questions answered by ChatGPT, simply add “Ask ChatGPT” as a keyword at the start of your questions. For example, I can say, “Ask ChatGPT about the 10 best fantasy series of 2024.” Siri will directly send the question to ChatGPT without an intermediate step.
Use ChatGPT with Writing Tools
Another way to use ChatGPT with Apple Intelligence is via its Writing Tools feature. The Apple Intelligence Writing Tools feature allows you to proofread and rewrite text. It can also change the tone of the text as per your instructions.
However, it cannot compose new text. That’s where ChatGPT can help you. In the Writing Tools pop-up window, you will see a Compose button. When you tap on it, you will get a Compose with ChatGPT option.
Type your instructions in the field and hit the up arrow to send it to ChatGPT. ChatGPT will write the piece and add it to the document. You can use this feature in Notes, Mail, Pages, and any other app that supports Apple’s Writing Tools feature.
Use ChatGPT with Visual Intelligence
If you have an iPhone 16 series device, you know it comes with a new Camera Control button. With the iOS 18.3 update, the Camera Control button gains a new feature - Visual Intelligence.
To use Visual Intelligence on your iPhone, long-press the Camera Control and scan the object you want to learn more about.
Apple Intelligence will do its best to find relevant information. If you are not happy with the response, you can tap the Ask button to send the query to ChatGPT. ChatGPT will analyze the image and provide details about the object.
You can then use the chat field to ask more questions about it.
